NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Saints baseball team opened up their 2023 slate on Thursday afternoon, traveling to Christopher Newport for a non-conference affair.
Marymount erased a four-run deficit, but ultimately fell in contest by a final score of 6-5.Â

- Jordan Dickson went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and a stolen bag, adding a run.
- Bobby Leitzel had a two-hit day with an RBI, adding a stolen base to his line.
- Catcher Chad Singleton had an RBI single on the day.Â

- Andrew Schaeb had a strong showing on the mound in relief in his Saints debut, throwing 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts to just one walk.Â
How It Happened
- The Captains put across four in the bottom frame of the first inning to take a commanding lead.Â
- The Saints got their first runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning, with Singleton knocking a single up the middle, scoring Max Nathan. A throwing error from the CNU outfielder pushed across Ryo Fabre.Â
- Leitzel kept the train moving in the frame, knocking a single past the Captains' diving shortstop, scoring Singleton.
- Down 5-to-3 in the top of the seventh, Smith came up with two men on, punching a single to right field. An error by the Captains' fielder scored both base runners and giving way to Smith to make it to third.Â
- A lone homer from CNU in the bottom of the sevent would round up the scoring in the contest, with CNU ultimately coming out on top 6-to-5.Â
