ARLINGTON, Va. – In intense fashion, the Marymount men's basketball team opened up their stint in the Pablo Coto Tournament with an overtime win over the visiting Albright Lions in overtime.
With the win, the Saints move to 2-2 overall on the early season and will compete in the championship matchup on Sunday.
NOTABLE
- Marcus Stubbs and Montell Cooper each narrowly missed double-doubles with nine rebounds apiece. Stubbs put up 22 points, with Cooper adding 21.
- Marcus Beckett had 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. He added two blocks in the win.
- In the overtime needed for the win, the Saints went 4-of-5 from the floor.
- The Saints went with a run-and-gun approach to the game, notching 31 points on fast break opportunities.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams opened the game trading threes before Albright continued their hot streak, taking a 16-7 lead at the 12:16 mark.
- Stubbs scored four in a row to put a dent into the Lions' lead.
- Stubbs sank a three with under four minutes to play in the half to take the lead.
- Miles Phillips sank a three at the tail end of the half to give the Saints a 32-to-24 lead heading into intermission.
- Marymount continued to try to hold onto their lead in the second half, with Albright threatening throughout.
- A three from the Lions tied up the contest with eight minutes left on the clock.
- With Albright holding onto a three-point lead, the Saints needed to make something special happen in the waning minutes of the game.
- Stubbs found Beckett with a contested look, who sank the three to force overtime.
- Marymount utilized strong defense in the overtime period to keep it close, giving them a chance at the end.
- With 10 second left to play, Stubbs sank the dagger within the arc to give the Saints the win.
