Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Topples Marywood

ARLINGTON – Taking on the defending Atlantic East champion Marywood on Saturday afternoon, Marymount women's soccer pitched a shutout with a solid 2-0 win to hand the Pacers their first conference loss of the season.

NOTABLE
  • The win marked the first time since Oct. 20, 2018 that Marymount topped the Pacers (2-0 in Scranton, Pa.)
  • Laney Placido, who was honored before the game with the Atlantic East Woman of the Year Award, scored her second goal of the season.
  • First-year Minnie Morris found the back of the net for the first time in her career.
  • Hannah Mockenhaupt and the Saints defense put up their third clean sheet in a row and sixth of the season.
  • Mockenhaupt has now held opponents scoreless for over 324 consecutive minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Marywood held a decisive offensive advantage in the first half, firing off seven shots compared to three for the Saints. But none came particularly close to finding the back of the net.
  • In the 53rd minute, a string of passes in the box from Daniela Carillo-Torres and Placido allowed Morris to turn and fire for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Saints refused to sit back despite the lead, continuing to push for another goal as the second half waned on.
  • In the 84th minute, Brigid Sullivan was fouled just inside the 18-yard box, bringing Placido to the penalty spot. She drilled the shot with ease and the Saints held on for the massive 2-0 win.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints boast a 3-1-1 mark in conference action and currently hold the No. 1 seed for the postseason.
  • Marymount will travel to Neumann on Wednesday night with a chance to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a victory.
  • A draw would clinch at least a top-two seed and a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
  • The first round of the playoffs is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, while the semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31.
