Saints Prevail in Overtime against Gwynedd Mercy

ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount women's basketball needed overtime on Saturday afternoon but prevailed 65-56 over Gwynedd Mercy to move to 2-0 in Atlantic East play.    

NOTABLE
  • The Saints fed Chandler Eddleton in the paint all day and she responded with a career-high 29 points. She added six rebounds and four assists.
  • Symantha Shackelford finished 9-of-12 from the free-throw line and scored 14 points.
  • Claire Smith led the Saints with season-highs in rebounds (12) and assists (six).
  • It was Marymount's first overtime game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Marymount held Gwynedd without a bucket for the first 7:20 of the game.
  • The Saints held an 8-2 advantage after the first quarter.
  • MU took a 22-10 lead with 3:21 left in the second quarter thanks to a bucket from Eddleton. It was Marymount's largest lead of the day.
  • Marymount took a 24-15 lead into the locker room.
  • Gwynedd Mercy took its first lead of the day with a triple from Kayla Sharkey with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
  • The Griffins outscored the Saints 22-14 in the third quarter but still trailed by one heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Marymount took a 46-39 lead on an Ava Achtyl basket with 8:16 left in regulation. It was Marymount's last field goal of regulation.
  • Smith tied the game on a free throw with 34 seconds left and the Saints forced a turnover to send the game to overtime.
  • After trailing by four early in overtime, the Saints relied on Eddleton and Shackelford down the stretch. The duo combined for the final 12 points over the final 2:41 to give Marymount a 65-56 victory.

  • Marymount will remain at home for another Atlantic East tilt against Neumann on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
  • Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM at Converse Family Fieldhouse.
