ARLINGTON, Va. - Getting back into conference action on Saturday afternoon, the Saints played host to the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University.
Leading for much of the contest, the Griffins were able to come away with the win over Marymount by a final score of 76-72. With the loss, the Saints fall to 5-9 overall on the year, 1-1 in Atlantic East play.Â
Notable
- Marcus Stubbs put up 21 total points for MU, going a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line, 2-4 from beyond the arc. He added five rebounds in the contest.Â
- Miles Phillips had a strong day for Marymount, dropping 13 off of the bench. He was 2-2 from three-point range, 4-6 total from the field.Â
- Ra'Shawn Cook and Wyatt Hockenberry each added nine on the day, with Cook dishing out four total assists and grabbing five boards.
- As a whole, the Saints continued to impress from the charity stripe, going 25-for-28, good for 89.3%.Â
How It Happened
- The game started with a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, and with the Saints starting to pull away a bit, Phillips sank a three to give MU an early 13-6 lead. Peja Boyd sank a bucket to continue giving Marymount momentum.
- At the nine minute mark, Cook drove the lane and sank the contested layup, giving Marymount a 13-point advantage.Â
- With the Saints still holding a strong advantage late in the first half, the visiting Griffins began to show life and a buzzer-beating three put the score at 41-37 in favor of MU heading into the half.Â
- Gwynedd Mercy took over the game early in the second frame, but a Stubbs jumper put the game even at 50 apiece with fifteen minutes left to play.Â
- MU began to gain momentum, and freshman Bryan Etienne took advantage, driving down the court and drawing the foul. He sank both free throws to give Marymount a six-point lead.Â
- Down the stretch, the Saints continued to press on but were unable to find the signifying bucket, ultimately falling in the affair.Â
