Saints Open Season at #4 Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Marymount men's volleyball team opened up their 2023 competitive slate at #4 Stevens on Friday night.

A trio of tight sets went in favor of the Ducks, ultimately taking down the Saints 3-0. 

Notable
  • Mason Moore put up a solid .250 attacking percentage on the night, knocking four total kills while adding two block assists. 
  • Diego Peña knocked four kills, with a .200 hitting percentage, while adding three digs in the affair. 
  • Devon Robinson knocked a team-high five kills in his Saints debut. 
  • Hayden Kerekes had three kills in the contest, adding a block assist. 
  • Grayson Andrews put up 16 total assists with four digs and two service aces.
How It Happened
  • Luke Morris started out the season for the Saints by knocking a quick ace in the first serve of the match to give Marymount a quick 1-0 lead. After a Stevens' point, Robinson knocked a kill to put the Saints up 2-1.
  • After falling to 7-2 in the first set, the Saints answered with a 5-to-3 run to get within three points of the Ducks at 10-7.
  • MU scored three unanswered points later in the first set, capped off by an ace from Andrews, to put the early score at 13-11 in favor of the Ducks. 
  • Stevens scored six unanswered points to cap off the first set, with Marymount going down to 1-0. 
  • Down 6-1 to start off the second set of play, Marymount began to grab some momentum with four straight points. A block assist from Andrews and Moore finished off the run and gave MU life as the second set continued. 
  • A 5-2 run later in the second set put the Saints within two. Kerekes put the final touch on the run with a strong kill off the set from Andrews.
  • Stevens ultimately took advantage down the waning points of the second set, sending Marymount to the bench to draw up a game plan to make the comeback. 
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to start out the third set. Stevens continued to try to pull away, but Marymount stayed on their tails. 
  • Six straight points from Stevens put the score at 20-9 late in the third set. 
  • Staring at a large deficit, the Saints weren't going to go down too easy. Scoring five straight, MU began to spark some life, but Stevens was able to grab the decisive point, taking down Marymount in three-straight.
Up Next
  • Marymount will hit the training court until Wednesday, Jan. 18th, when they travel to Messiah for a 6:00 PM match.
  • A week from today, the Saints will continue their road-heavy start to the season with a tri-match in St. Davids, Pa. where they will take on Eastern and Elmira.
  • First sets for the tri are scheduled for 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, respectively.
