FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Marymount women's volleyball started with a convincing three-set victory over Shenandoah on Saturday before dropping a four-set contest to host Mary Washington to close out the 2022 regular season slate.
NOTABLE
- Marymount had 16 kills and no errors in the opening set against Shenandoah to set the standard in a sweep of the Hornets.
- Elissa Munsterman had 14 kills to pace the Saints on offense while Jada Griffith stepped up with 17 digs to lead the defensive effort against Shenandoah.
- Sophie Meredith saw action in all four sets against Mary Washington and recorded 10 kills in the process.
- Sydney Sands (21 assists) and Alexis Franklin (19 assists) facilitated the Marymount attack against the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a strong 25-13 win to start the match against Shenandoah, Marymount nearly surrendered a 22-16 lead against the Hornets in the second set.
- Shenandoah rallied to have a set point at 24-23, but Marymount scored the final three points to take the set, 26-24.
- MU closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
- Against Mary Washington, the Saints fell 25-13 and 25-17 in the first two sets.
- In the third set, Marymount held a 14-8 lead at one point but ended up in a back-and-forth battle down the stretch.
- Back-to-back kills from Munsterman and Meredith gave MU a 28-26 win to extend the match one more set.
- Marymount continued the momentum and once again held a 14-8 lead in the fourth set.
- But Mary Washington scored 10 of the final 14 points to take the match, 3-1.
UP NEXT
- Marymount finished the regular season with a 17-14 record, including 5-1 in Atlantic East play.
- The Saints have clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Atlantic East Tournament.
- Marymount will host a semifinal match on Thursday, Nov. 3. Time and opponent are still to be determined.
- The championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
