Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Marymount University women's basketball team remained hot on Saturday afternoon, earning another Atlantic East Conference victory after topping Gwynedd Mercy University, 83-71.
Sophomore Katie McShea was the main piece of that success, dropping in a career-high 34 points on 15-for-21 shooting and pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds, while adding a game-high two blocks to a loaded statistical line.
Playing against a Griffin offense that averages nearly 50 three-point attempts a game, the Saints knew they had to continue to play the solid defense they have all season in Saturday's matchup. Marymount is currently ranked 14th in the country in scoring defense (50.1 points allowed per game). For the game, they held Gwynedd Mercy to 31-percent shooting, and just 26.4 percent from deep.
The first quarter remained tight throughout, taking an 18-18 tied game into the second 10-minute stretch. The second quarter is when the offense came to life for MU, dropping in 25 points to carry a 10-point lead into the locker room. McShea, for the half, only missed one shot, leading the offense with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
In the third quarter, the Griffins found some offense of their own, closing the gap to one point with a 27-point period with six three-pointers. With some adjustments heading into the fourth and a little more resiliency, the Saints bounced back with a 22-11 final 10 minutes, while holding Gwynedd to 18.5-percent shooting to roll to a 12-point victory on the road.
McShea was joined in double figures with senior Gabriella Haddad and freshman Lauren Cunningham with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Cunningham's 11 points marked a career best for the freshman guard, as well as her 31 minutes of play.
The Saints are now 13-4 for the season, 3-1 in league play. They'll travel back home for their next game, taking on Immaculata University on Wednesday, January 22 for another league matchup. The Mighty Macs, with another conference victory on Saturday at Neumann University, currently sit 3-0 in the Atlantic East. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
