Sysyn tosses one-hit complete game; Saints conclude three-game weekend series with victory over Colonials

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount baseball team took the final game of a three-game weekend series against Western Connecticut State on Sunday at Bishop O'Connell High School behind a gem of a performance by sophomore starting pitcher Kenny Sysyn.

The Saints fell in the Saturday nine-inning showdown, 7-4, after the Colonials slowed down Marymount's three-run rally to tie the game with three more of their own in the fifth and sixth innings to take the decision.

In the opening game of a seven-inning doubleheader on Sunday, the Saints built up a five-run lead while junior starting pitcher Conner Hall kept the Colonials off the board through four innings. Unfortunately, the bats heated up for Western Connecticut State in the top of the seventh, sending seven runs around to take a lead that would hold for the remainder of the game.

In the final game of the weekend, Sysyn pitched a gem, tossing his first career complete game. Through seven innings of work, he gave up just one hit en route to the Saints 11-1 victory. He opened the game with three-straight innings of three-up, three-down including six strikeouts in the stretch. The junior finished with a career-high nine strikeouts and just two walks after seeing 26 batters for the day, while earning his second win on the mound this season.

The one run scored by the Colonials was unearned due to his reaching base on an error by junior Austin Sizemore at third base, eventually scoring in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.

However, that one run didn't stand up to the 11 the Saints put up in the game. Marymount put away the first run in the first inning when junior Michael Wade sprinted home on a wild pitch. Following the one run in the top of the fourth by the Colonials, the Saints rattled off two in the bottom of the frame, then four more in each of the next two innings.

For the three-game series, junior Luke Tyree paced the offensive with five hits, including his 100th of his career in the first game on Sunday, three runs, three RBI and two walks. Of his five hits, one was a triple. His work on the bases also had him steal two bases with classmate Wade.

Senior Javier Herrera posted the best batting average for the weekend, going 4-for-6 at the plate (.667) in his two games played in right field on Sunday for two runs and a RBI. Freshman James DiGiulian also had a great outing in game one of the doubleheader, knocking two doubles for three RBI and a run.

The Saints head on the road for another non-conference matchup on Wednesday, March 7, traveling to Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
