McShea's Career Night Not Enough On Road To Mustangs

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Freshman forward Katie McShea had a career night with game-highs in points and rebounds en route to her second double-double of the season, but the Marymount University women's basketball team suffered a 76-63 loss on Wednesday at Stevenson University.

It was an up-hill battle for much of the game, as the Saints (6-3) only saw the lead in the opening minute after junior Regan Lohr answered a Mustang layup with a three-pointer for the 3-2 advantage. However, the Mustangs answered with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 16-5 lead before McShea came to life before the end of the first period. She added 10 points in four minutes, while sophomore Aidan Phillips added a layup to get the Saints within six of Stevenson at the first break, 23-17.

McShea led the Marymount offense in the second quarter with six more points, totaling 16 in the first half, but the Saints carried a nine-point deficit into the locker room, 43-34.

The third quarter was productive for the Saints, outscoring the Mustangs, 15-11, to chip away at the spread, getting as close as five points several times.

Trailing by five entering the final 10 minutes, 54-49, the Saints saw their single-digit deficit get back to double when the Mustangs opened the fourth with seven-straight points before McShea silenced the run with a layup.

Several minutes later, down by 10, Lohr sparked some life in the Saints with another three-pointer off the dish by Phillips, and McShea followed a minute later with a layup to get back within five, 61-56, with 4:28 remaining. However, down the stretch, Stevenson was strong at the free-throw line, hitting 9-of-10 attempts to seal the victory.

McShea dropped in a career-high 29 points while pulling in a career-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Lohr also had a double-digit night with 10 points, including two long balls.

The Saints will look to rebound this weekend in a rivalry matchup in Fredericksburg, Virginia, traveling to the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, December 8. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
