Saints cruise past Wolverines for another league victory

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) women's basketball squad downed Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference clash on Saturday afternoon, 63-49. The Saints improve to 17-4 overall, and 11-3 in conference play.

Both squads remained close to one another in the first quarter until the Saints broke away after piecing together a 5-0 run. Junior Nicole Viscuso knocked down a bucket underneath, followed by a shot from beyond the arc by sophomore Abby Fisher. The small run put the Saints up 17-11 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. MU ended the quarter on a quick layup from freshman Tenesha Green, pulling ahead 21-16.

In the second quarter, tenacious defense on both ends of the court kept both squads off the scoreboard until senior Kiki Laux laid the ball in a minute into the quarter. At just under the halfway mark of the quarter, junior Leah Hurst sparked an 8-0 run after knocking down a three-pointer. The blue and white led 38-23 as they headed to the locker rooms at halftime.

Marymount kept the pressure on to kick off the second half. The Saints opened the half on a 6-0 run, after Viscuso went 4-4 from the line and added a layup to push the team's lead to 21. The Saints cruised through the rest of the quarter, maintaining a comfortable 54-29 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

The Saints remained in control of the tempo to finish out regulation. The squad saw its biggest lead at the six-minute mark, bolstering a 30-point advantage, 61-31.

Viscuso pieced together an impressive performance, notching 12 points, seven rebounds, while shooting 6-for-6 from the line. Laux added 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Saints. On the defensive end, sophomore Tyffani McQueen picked off four steals.

As a team, the Saints went 20-for-22 from the line, registering a 90.9-percent team free-throw percentage. The Saints outrebounded the Wolverines, 38-22, and converted 18 points off turnovers.

The women will travel to No. 5 Christopher Newport University for another CAC matchup on Wednesday, February 8. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
