No. 25 Saints fall on last-second overtime finish by No. 19 Eagles

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference semifinal game was nothing less than exciting on Thursday night, but the third-seeded and No. 25 Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team fell on a late finish in overtime to second-seeded and No. 19 University of Mary Washington, 56-54, to end its league postseason run.

In a tight matchup the entire game, seeing neither team gain more than a five-point advantage and the contest have 14 lead changes and nine ties, it came down to the wire at the end of regulation.

With a 49-47 lead and less than 40 seconds left on the clock, the league's top defense in the Saints was put to the test. Putting on intense pressure, Marymount held strong until the Eagles found a hole and UMW's Brianne Comden got the ball down the right lane. Still keeping pressure, Comden tossed up the ball for a leaning-away right-handed layup that rolled in to draw the score even at 49-49 with 31 seconds left.

Following a Marymount timeout, the Saints brought the ball down with a chance to win it, but an offensive foul sent the ball the other way on a drive down the lane by junior Nicole Viscuso

Again, the Saint defense was back to work, this time coming up with the steal six seconds remaining. Bringing the ball down the court, the Saints called a quick timeout with three seconds left to draw up a play. Getting the ball in play, junior Leah Hurst took two dribbles and pulled up on a contested jumper just inside the arc that would fall short and send the game to overtime.

In the extra five minutes, the scoring came from just two players on the court, freshman Regan Lohr and UMW's Megan Green. With a dish from the top of the key to the right wing, Lohr cashed in on a three-pointer to put the Saints up first in overtime.

Over the next several minutes, the scoring came to a halt for the Saints while Green dropped in three free throws to tie the game up before finding room for a layup and a 54-52 advantage with 1:17 left.

A quick inbounds off Green's make had senior Kiki Laux sending a long ball up the court where Lohr got behind the transitioning defense for the fast-break layup and a tied ball game.

In the closing minute, the Saints had an opportunity to take the lead but a missed jumper by Laux with 15 seconds remaining sent the ball the other way. Following an Eagle timeout, the Saint defense put up a wall as the clock ticked down to the final five seconds. Green, who had all five of UMW's overtime points, created some room on the left side and put up a contested layup that rolled over the rim and in with two seconds remaining that would play out as the game winner.

Lohr finished the night with a game-high 15 points, including three long balls, while pulling down a tied team-high seven rebounds. Laux and Hurst also had double-figure scoring games with 13 and 12, respectively.
