Fourth-quarter surge pushes Saints past Spartans

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va.—A fourth quarter surge pushed the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team past York College of Pennsylvania in a Capital Athletic Conference battle on Saturday afternoon. The 60-55 victory over the Spartans moved the Saints to 19-4 overall, and 13-3 in CAC action, sealing up a top-three spot in the conference tournament.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Saints trailed by two, 45-43. Sophomore Tyffani McQueen brought in a defensive rebound and fed junior Leah Hurst at the other end to tie the game at 45. Less than 20 seconds later, McQueen notched a steal and Hurst converted it for two more points to take a 47-45 lead.

The momentum tilted back-and-forth until the Saints pieced together a 10-0 run to take a commanding 59-53 lead. Junior Nicole Viscuso found McQueen underneath for a quick bucket to ignite the run.

McQueen kept up the intensity on the defensive end, snagging another steal and converting it for two more points. Hurst and senior Kiki Laux garnered back-to-back layups, and McQueen rounded out the run by sinking two free throws, giving Marymount a 59-53 advantage.

York managed to answer with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation, cutting the deficit to four, 59-55, but the Saints kept their composure through the rest of the game, prevailing on top 60-55.

McQueen pieced together an impressive performance all around, notching a game-high and career-high seven steals, a game-high 14 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and went 6-for-6 from the line. Hurst and freshman Regan Lohr added 12 points apiece, while freshman Gabriella Haddad came off the bench and notched 11 points and six rebounds.

The women will be back in action on Wednesday, February 15, as they play host to CAC opponent and No. 7 University of Mary Washington. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
