Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Behind a game-high 21 points by freshman Regan Lohr, the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team picked up a key Capital Athletic Conference road victory on Saturday afternoon, using two strong middle quarters to down St. Mary's College of Maryland, 63-56.
Beyond Lohr's 21-point day, defensively, senior Kiki Laux wreaked havoc on the Seahawk lineup, picking off a career-high nine steals to go along with her 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior Nicole Viscuso also notched a double-figure day in scoring, registering 10 points.
It was a close-knit battle through the first quarter, seeing the Seahawks take a two-point advantage into the first break, 20-18. The Saints, however, rallied back to outscore St. Mary's, 14-8, in the next 10 minutes to carry a four-point lead into the locker room.
The 14-8 quarter was sparked by an eight-point run by the Saints in the latter half of the period, kicked off by a layup by junior Leah Hurst. Laux not only added a few steals in the stretch, but she also finished two inside baskets, while freshmen Gabriella Haddad and Lohr dropped in a free throw each.
Coming out for the third quarter, the Saints picked up where they left off, opening with a 7-0 stretch to take their first double-digit lead, 39-28. Lohr started it off with an and-one finish and added another jumper, before Viscuso capitalized on a steal by sophomore Abby Fisher with a jumper of her own.
The Seahawks, down by double digits entering into the final quarter, didn't give up though. By the 3:21 mark, a jumper brought the score back to even, 51-51. Needing a momentum swing, that's exactly what Lohr gave the Saints. On the next possession, the freshman drove the lane to another and-one finish which would ignite another seven-point stretch for MU to push back out the advantage.
Down the stretch, the Saints hit the crucial free throws to hold off the Seahawks, 63-56.
The women are back in action on Wednesday, February 1, as they head to Southern Virginia University for another league matchup. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
