Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team traveled down 95 for a Capital Athletic Conference battle against rival, University of Mary Washington, falling for just the second time in league play all season, 48-34.
The Eagles jumped out early on the Saints, using the first three minutes of the contest to push a 7-1 lead. Marymount continued to battle though, hitting a 6-1 run of its own to cut the deficit to one by the 4:29 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore Nicole Viscuso kicked off the stretch, pulling down an offensive board and powering back up for the finish. Viscuso commanded the paint on the next offensive series, grabbing another rebound that would turn into two points off a freshman Tyffani McQueen jumper. After the Eagles knocked in a free throw, senior Kievanna Lacey capped off the run for the Saints with her first jumper of the game.
Senior Miranda Krott tacked in two free throws in the quarter, but UMW carried a six-point advantage headed into the second, 14-8.
With two of the top teams in scoring defense in the country, Marymount in fifth (46.2) and Mary Washington in sixth (47.5), seeing the totals in the second and fourth quarter by each squad follows in suit. In both quarters, the teams combined for 16 points.
Although the Saints remained in striking distance for much of the second half, the closest they would come to the Eagles is seven points at various times.
Lacey led the offense for the game with nine points, while Viscuso and sophomore Leah Hurst chipped in for eight and seven, respectively. Krott ripped down a game-high 12 rebounds, five of which were offensive, while swatting away a team-high two blocks.
The women will return home for their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, February 17, as they host Salisbury University for its annual Play 4 Kay pink game. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
