Swim teams split with Yellow Jackets in tight meet decided in final race

ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams competed against Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon. In a very tight meet, the men were able to outlast the Yellow Jackets, but the women fell just short.

Men's Swimming

The Saints entered the final race of the meet trailing by one point, but managed to snag a first- and second-place finish in the last event to conquer the Yellow Jackets, 108.5-96.5.

Marymount jumped ahead in the first event, taking first in the 200-yard medley relay after touching the wall at 1:39.90. Seniors William Bryan and James Gibbons, sophomore Ian Griffith and freshman Tedd Pham combined their efforts to beat Randolph-Macon's relay team by two seconds. The Saints finished the day in a similar fashion with a crucial victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Senior Tyler Hayes, Gibbons, and sophomores Trey Brown and Isaiah Jones each contributed to the final time of 1:28.00 to notch the first place finish.

Both Hayes and Jones performed well earlier in the meet to clench first place finishes in their respected events. Hayes placed first in the 50-yard free with a time of 21.91, and Jones took first in the 100-yard free after touching the wall at 48.92.

Also notching a top-place finish for the Saints was freshman Zachary Payne who touched the wall at 10:39.97 in the 1000-yard free. Payne also took a second-place finish in the 500-yard free with a time 0f 5:10.60.

Women's Swimming

The women's squad was put in a similar position as the men, entering the last event of the meet leading the Yellow Jackets by a small margin of one point. The Saints fell just short though, 106-98.

The blue and white went to work early, notching a top-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time out 1:55.11. Senior Kassidy Schmidt, junior Morgan Alston and freshmen Hayley Elizondo and Grace Donovan teamed up to form the winning relay team. Donovan, junior Kristen Kilroy, sophomore Ana DeMaso, and freshman Jessie Bricker fought hard to close out the meet, taking second in the 200-yard free relay (1:48.40).

Elizondo pieced together an impressive performance to pace the Saints throughout the meet. She took first in the 50-yard free (25.86) and the 100-yard breast (1:10.19) to add 18 points to the scoreboard for the women.

Alston also added a top-place finish for the Saints in the 200-yard IM after touching the wall at 2:14.82, seven seconds ahead of the next finisher. Sophomore Delaney Rodgers took first place in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:06.93.

Both squads will head on the road to compete at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, a two-day event in Richmond, Virginia. The Saints will open up on Friday, December 2, and finish out the following day.
