Saints fall for first time in league play

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. — The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team stumbled on the road Friday night, snapping its seven-game win streak with a 3-0 loss (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) to Salisbury University.

The loss comes as just the Saints' first in Capital Athletic Conference play this season, as they sit at 4-1 in league play, 17-6 overall.

Sets one and two were tight from start to finish, seeing a total of 15 ties and nine lead changes, unfortunately ending in favor of the Sea Gulls. The first game had Salisbury take an early advantage, but a quick rally by the Saints had them bump ahead, 8-7.

The Gulls answered with a stretch of their own to maintain the lead for the rest of the set, but it didn't go without a fight. Trailing 22-17, Marymount put together a 5-2 run to get within two, but an attack error by the Saints would end the set in favor of SU.

The second set remained close through until the late part of the game, after the Saints rattled off four-straight points to put them ahead 16-14 and force Salisbury to use a timeout. The break proved successful for the Gulls, coming out to take back over the advantage before holding out for the 25-22 decision.

In set three, Salisbury carried the early momentum and kept pace throughout to seal up the match with a 25-19 game.

Seniors Emileigh Rettig and Cailyn Thomas led the offense with seven and six kills, respectively, while sophomore Caroline Hanson set up for 12 assists. Rettig and freshman libero Theresa Buscemi led the defense with 14 and 13 digs, in that order, and sophomore Ashton Walker registered another strong block game with seven including two solo blocks.

The women return home for their next match, as they host Catholic University of America on Wednesday, October 19 for their annual Dig Pink match. First serve is set for 7 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
