Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team cruised by Capital Athletic Conference opponent Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon, 79-35, to be the first time in the league to reach the 10-win mark, while improving its overall record to 15-3.
The Saints jumped on top early dropping in the first bucket of the game after senior Kievanna Lacey stripped the ball from Frostburg and senior Miranda Krott and sophomore Nicole Viscuso connected on the other end for the inside finish. Marymount continued the intensity on the defensive end with a block by Viscuso followed by another steal by sophomore Leah Hurst. Both defensive stops led to quick baskets for the Saints to push the advantage to 6-2. Frostburg was forced to take a timeout after MU extended their lead to seven with just over five minutes left in the quarter, but Marymount stayed hot finishing the quarter on a 10-3 run to lead, 21-7, at the first break. Viscuso led the Saints with eight points while also pulling in two rebounds and a block. As a team, the Saints hit the boards hard racking up 15 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.
Freshman Tyffani McQueen picked up right where the Saints left off with a quick steal to open the second quarter. Lacey struck first in the quarter with a strong finish underneath. The pace remained fast on the offensive end, as the Saints continued to build a cushion with an 8-0 run. Marymount remained tenacious on the defensive end keeping the Bobcats to just five points in the quarter while racking up an additional three steals. Viscuso finished the half with 12 points to lead the Saints, while Krott held down the defensive end with 11 of the Saints' 30 rebounds for the half. As a team, the blue and white out-rebounded the Bobcats 30-10, as the Saints headed to the locker room with a comfortable 39-12 lead.
Viscuso opened up the second half with a jumper from the top of the key, assisted by Hurst. McQueen followed with a jumper less than a minute later extending the Saints lead to 29. Both teams continued trading points throughout the quarter with the Saints extending their lead to 34 by the time the clock hit zero, 60-26. The quarter finished on a strong note from Lacey, after going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line and finishing with a layup at the buzzer. Lacey led the Saints in the quarter with eight points.
The fourth quarter started with Viscuso scooping up an offensive rebound and finishing underneath. Marymount didn't back down, going on to outscore the Bobcats in the final 10 minutes, 19-11. The Saints had 11 different players score by the end of the game, including freshman Erin Earhart putting up eight points and four rebounds all in the fourth quarter. The last Saint to score in the game was Earhart who finished the jumper after a dish from senior Destiny Welch.
Viscuso pieced together another impressive performance, falling shy of another double-double with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Lacey was right behind Viscuso with 18 points, three steals and three assists. Krott held a strong presence on the defensive end with a season- and game-high 14 rebounds to go along with her eight points and three assists.
The women will pick back up at home on Monday, February 1 to take on CAC opponent St. Mary's College of Maryland, a game rescheduled due to Winter Storm Jonas. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
