Rogers notches 100th victory; Saints battle past Wolverines

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – After a week off from competition due to Winter Storm Jonas, the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team took the road for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt with Wesley College on Wednesday night, battling out a 57-52 victory to notch Head Coach Ashlee Rogers' 100th win at the helm of the program.

The 100th victory comes in just Rogers' sixth season as the coach of the Saints, maintaining a 100-41 overall record currently for a .709 win percentage. The percentage places her in the top three in the history of the CAC, behind current University of Mary Washington Head Coach Deena Applebury (.800) and past Saints' Head Coach Bill Finney (.762). Finney earned his 100th victory with the Saints in the first game of the 1989-90 season, maintaining a 100-50 tally at the moment of the milestone, good enough for a .667 win percentage.

It was a battle all the way through the contest with eight lead changes and five ties, with the final swaying of the score going in favor of Marymount in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Trailing 43-42 to the Wolverines at the end of the third, the Saints used a 15-9 fourth to grab the final lead and hold on for the 57-52 victory. Freshman Tyffani McQueen and senior Kievanna Lacey opened the final 10 minutes with layups that sandwiched a jumper by Wesley to grab a 46-45 advantage, but it would be erased on the next offensive series for the Wolverines, as Wesley's Alexus Stroud knocked down a jumper to retake the lead once again.

It was the last time they held onto the lead though, as a strong defensive series by the Saints ending in a steal by sophomore Leah Hurst transitioned into a feed by Lacey to junior Kiki Laux for the finish inside to reclaim the final lead of the game, 48-47, with 5:12 remaining.

The score spread further in favor of MU following a jumper in the paint by sophomore Nicole Viscuso while drawing the foul for the and-one three-point play. Wesley's Stroud stayed hot on the next series, knocking down a three to get the Wolverines within one, 51-50, but that's as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. Lacey capped off the final two minutes with a jumper and two free throws, while Viscuso added two free throws of her own.

The first three quarters of the game were just as competitive, with the largest lead of nine points coming at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter in favor of the Saints. That nine-point advantage came off a strong start to the quarter after trailing 16-14 through the first. The second opened up with 11-straight points by the Saints, paced by four points apiece by Viscuso and senior Miranda Krott. McQueen chipped in for a jumper late in the stretch, while Lacey capped it off with a free throw to put MU up 25-16.

Viscuso led the Saints' offense for the night, posting a game-high 20 points. It's her fifth game this season with 20-plus points, as she sits in second in the CAC in scoring with 15.1 points per game. Lacey also posted double-figures in scoring with 14 for the night.

On the defensive end for a Saints' squad that currently ranks fifth in the country in scoring defense, MU forced 13 Wolverine turnovers including six steals. Hurst and Lacey each tallied two for the game.

The women will return home for their next game, as they welcome Frostburg State University to the Verizon Sports Arena for a conference tilt on Saturday, January 30. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
