Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team hosted Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington University on Saturday afternoon, stumbling for its first league loss, 49-62. The Saints move to 12-3 overall this season, 7-1 in the CAC.
The Saints trailed in the first quarter, 5-0, before senior Miranda Krott cashed in for two at the charity stripe to get MU on the board. Most of the action happened on the defensive end as both teams managed to rack up several steals apiece and seeing most shots happen late in the shot clock. The Eagles held the advantage through the opening 10 minutes, 16-11, with freshman Tyffani McQueen leading the Saints' offense with five points.
Sophomore Nicole Viscuso started the second quarter with a swift turn-around jumper for on the right post. The Eagles kept their distance for most of the 10-minute stretch, but the Saints kept chipping away at the deficit to eventually get within four at the 4:07 mark following a layin by junior Kiki Laux. The defense remained stiffling through to the break on both ends, but UMW managed to work up to a seven-point advantage by the half, 30-23.
McQueen, who was pacing the offense through the first two quarters with seven points, found the net again to start of the second half. The Eagles quickly responded and extended their lead to 11 before Marymount took a 30 second timeout. Out of the timeout, sophomore Leah Hurst grabbed a quick layup. The Saints trailed by as much as 16 in the third, but used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 10 by the end of the quarter. The burst of offense started with a bucket by Viscuso and was followed by baskets from McQueen and junior Kievanna Lacey. The quarter ended with a steal by Lacey who went down and finished the tough basket at the rim to put the score at 48-38.
Lacey hit her stride in the fourth, scoring the first nine points for the Saints to get within five of the Eagles, 52-47, by the 3:08 mark. That's as close as MU would get though to Mary Washington, as it went 8-for-8 from the free throw line to close out the game.
McQueen and Lacey paced the Saints' offense with 13 and 11 points, respectively.. On the defensive end, Viscuso led with three steals, two blocks and seven rebounds, while Hurst pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
The women will head on the road to face Salisbury University on Wednesday, January 20 to close out the first half of conference play for the season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
