Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount women's basketball team outlasted York (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, downing the CAC foe by the narrowest of margins, 54-53. The Saints improve to 14-7 on the season and 10-4 in league play.
Freshman Leah Hurst led all scorers with 17 points – courtesy of her 5-for-9 performance from beyond the arc. Senior Sam Kane registered a career-high 12 points, while Kievanna Lacey continued her streak in double-figures, pouring in ten to round out the Saints' attack.
On the boards, Miranda Krott proved insatiable, hauling in a game-high 12 rebounds. Kane and Kiki Laux helped keep the Spartans at bay, snatching nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
A 7-0 run saw Marymount swipe an early advantage, 9-5, with just five minutes gone. Though the visitors closed the gap on the next possession, the Saints maintained their narrow lead over the next ten minutes.
Shea Wassel knotted the score at 24-24 with 3:54 on the clock, and four more free throws from the York senior saw the Spartans steal the lead, 28-24, by the 1:42 mark.
While Dominique Dickens closed the gap with an ensuing jump shot, two more Spartan tallies from the charity stripe put the lead out of reach. Kane chipped in a layup with just six seconds left to cut the deficit to two, 30-28, heading into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, it was York that struck first, though its lead was soon to be erased. Back-to-back buckets from Lacey and Hurst tied the score at 33-33, but the Saints were not quite ready to take the lead just yet.
The Spartans jumped out to an eight-point lead, 46-38, after a quick 8-2 run. Marymount responded in kind with an 8-0 run of its own – tying the score at 46 apiece with 5:48 remaining.
Still, York pushed for and clung to its narrow lead, using a jump shot and a triple to extend the advantage to five, 51-46, once more.
Lacey chipped in five unanswered points over the next 30 seconds to knot the score at 51-51, and a Laux jumper put the Saints in front with 1:56 left to play.
Wassel punched in a layup to knot the score at 53-53 with just 1:27 showing on the clock, but a timely York foul sent Lacey to the line for the eventual game-winner.
Marymount shot an impressive 46.2% (6-for-13) from long range to power past the Spartans.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday as they host Penn State Harrisburg in CAC action. Tip time is slated for 6 p.m.
