Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount women's basketball squad used its consistent attack and prowess on the boards to down St. Mary's on Tuesday night, advancing to the CAC semifinals with the 66-48 win. The Saints improve to 18-8 on the season with the postseason victory.
Kievanna Lacey continued her hot streak, registering a game-high 20 points against the Seahawks. Lacey has scored 20 or more in three of her last four games.
Two other Saints posted double-digit outings, as Leah Hurst and Miranda Krott collected 13 and ten points, respectively. Krott proved just one rebound shy of a double-double, as she and Samantha Kane hauled in nine boards apiece in the effort.
Marymount made up its difference in the paint – outscoring St. Mary's 34-14 from the inside.
Despite winning opening possession, the Saints rushed an off-mark three, and saw the Seahawks draw first points on a Nina Haller layup.
The teams traded baskets over the next ten minutes or so, until Marymount finally used a 7-0 run to build some space, 18-12, by the 8:12 mark. The Saints expanded that lead just moments later, adding a 9-0 run to create a 12-point advantage, 27-15, with 6:53 left to play.
The Seahawks cut the deficit back to single-digits before time expired, trailing Marymount by nine, 31-22, heading into the break.
The Saints seemed adamant on sealing their semifinal bid, coming out of the half with another 9-0 run and retaking their double-figure lead and then some – a comfortable 42-24 advantage with 16:08 on the clock.
The Seahawks battled back to within ten, but could never breach the double-figure deficit. Marymount cemented its place in the CAC semifinals with an 11-2 run to close out the game – the 66-48 decision the direct result of the final push.
The Saints posted an impressive 51.9% (27-for-52) performance from the floor – vastly outshooting the Seahawks' 33.3% (17-for-51) display.
Marymount will travel to Mary Washington on Thursday for the CAC semifinal round. Mary Washington earned a first-round bye as the two-seed, and is set to host the Saints at 6:00 p.m.
