Box Score Newport News, Va. – The Marymount women's basketball squad dropped a hard-fought battle to Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Captains, 72-61, in overtime. Marymount slips to 15-8 on the season and 11-5 in league play with the loss.
Kievanna Lacey proved an unstoppable force for Marymount, posting a career-high 29 points on a 9-for-16 effort from the floor. On the boards, Miranda Krott and Leah Hurst hauled in six rebounds apiece.
The Saints outshot the Captains from the floor, posting a 37.7% (20-for-53) performance to the host's 36.5% (19-for-52). It was success from long range that proved the difference, as Christopher Newport registered a 42.1% (8-for-19) effort from beyond the arc – the Saints collected only three triples on the day.
Marymount led the Captains for the first ten minutes, but a long ball from the host with 10:27 showing saw the Saints face their first deficit of the day, 13-12.
The Saints ultimately proved unfazed by the Christopher Newport advantage, retaking the lead and then some. Marymount battled to a 16-16 knot with the Captains, and then erupted for a 12-3 run to close the frame – securing a 28-19 by the break.
The second half saw the Saints maintain a firm lead for about five minutes – and then the Captains made their charge. The host battled back within two, 35-33, by the 13:51 mark, and knotted the score at 39-39 just three minutes later.
A Leah Hurst long ball saw the Saints resurface, 42-39, with 10:38 left to play. Marymount, once again, was able to hold the lead for several minutes before the Captains came tiptoeing back into relevancy.
Christopher Newport hung close – very close – for the next several minutes, always within one or two shots. The Captains netted six straight attempts from the charity stripe to knot the score at 50-50 and then surpassed the Saints, 52-50, with 3:12 on the clock.
Lacey drilled a three to retake the lead, but this time the Saints' advantage proved rather short-lived. The Captains ignited a to-and-fro to close regulation; the squads tangled in a 56-56 deadlock.
Overtime saw the Saints tire, scoring only five points over the five-minute span. The Captains seemed to thrive in the extra time, using an 8-1 run over the final minute to put Marymount away, 72-61.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Salisbury in its final home game of the regular season. Tip time is set for 6 p.m.
