Women's basketball drops close battle to Mustangs

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team played Sunday afternoon, falling to the Mustangs of Stevenson University, 58-54, moving the Saints to 3-2 on the season. Sophomore Nicole Viscuso led the Saints with a career- and team-high 20 points, while managing to rack up a career-high 13 rebounds, good enough for her second collegiate double-double.

Stevenson would strike first off of a three by Caitlin Roy, but Marymount quickly answered off a jumper by freshman Tyffani McQueen. Later in the first quarter, the Mustangs went on a six-point stretch before Viscuso answered with four-straight points and Marymount's defense forced out four steals.

Senior Kievanna Lacey picked up a quick two points within the first 13 seconds of the second quarter to cut the deficit to nine. MU would later go on a 7-2 run off made free throws from freshman Tierney Goetz, senior Miranda Krott and Lacey and a jumper by junior Kiki Laux. The stretch helped the Saints draw the score even at 21 apiece with 1:59 remaining in the first half. Viscuso would end the half by finishing inside to take the lead for the Saints at 23-21. At the end of the first half, Viscuso had racked up eight rebounds and 12 points for the Saints.

McQueen, who was fed by Laux, opened up the second half with a jumper. A steal by sophomore Leah Hurst led to a layup by Viscuso to extend the Saint's lead to 27-21. Stevenson would go on a run of its own to tie the game at 27-27 with 5:58 remaining in the third quarter, which eventually led to both teams trading points to see four ties and two lead changes before the end of the quarter. Heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Saints held the lead at 40-38.

The fourth quarter started with a 3-0 run by the Saints to extend their lead to five. The Mustangs answered with a three and a layup by Sarah Tarbert to tie the game back up at 43-43. The lead swayed back and forth with three changes in the advantage, but would be maintained by SU. A strong finish underneath by Viscuso put the Saints within two, but MU fell short as Sarah Talbert knocked down two free throws to finish the game, 58-54.

Viscuso led the Saints in points and rebounds with 20 and 13, respectively, good enough for her second double-double this season. Lacey pieced together an impressive performance with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Sarah Talbert led the Mustangs with a game-high 27 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The women's squad will go on the road to face Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, December 2 to open up Capital Athletic Conference play. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
