Saints fall in close battle with Yellow Jackets in road dual meet

ASHLAND, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams traveled to Randolph-Macon College to face the Yellow Jackets on Saturday for their second-straight day of competition, as both teams fell in a close matchup.  

Men's Swimming 

The men's squad moves to 2-3 on the season after a 155-90 decision to the Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon. Junior Tyler Hayes, who had the lone top finish in the 50-yard freestyle, led the Saints. Hayes finished first in the 50-yard freestyle and touched the wall at 21.41 seconds, while also contributing to the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first as well.

The 200-yard medley relay team took first and consisted of Hayes, senior Matt Essig and juniors William Bryan and James Gibbons. The team finished the relay in 1:41.75 with Hayes posting the fastest time (20.86 seconds) in his sprint.

Marymount had several swimmers finish in the top two spots of their respective events. Essig grabbed second place in the 400-yard IM (4:37.80), the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.50) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.48). Juniors Robert Klazynski and Bryan finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.53) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.07), respectively.  Freshmen Ian Griffith and Isaiah Jones finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.71) and the 100–yard freestyle. Jones finished less than a half of a second behind Randolph-Macon's Mohamed Saleh with a time of 50.46 seconds.

Women's Swimming

The Saints fell short in the late events, falling 137-125 to the Yellow Jackets, moving them to 3-2 on the season. Leading the Saints on the day was sophomore Morgan Alston, who finished first in three individual events. Alston took first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.13), the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.05) and the 400-yard IM (4:55.49). 

An impressive performance was put together by freshmen Claire Cassidy and Katharina David in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle. Cassidy took first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.46) after beating Randolph-Macon's Rachel Samuelson by a tenth of a second. David won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.05 seconds and was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that took first later on in the meet.

The women finished the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, which consisted of David, seniors Taylor Hood and Jessica Hester and junior Hanna Del Signore. The team outswam Randolph-Macon's top team by less than a second after touching the wall at 1:46.29.

Both teams will travel back down that direction for the two-day Yellow Jackets Invitational, hosted by Randolph-Macon on December 4 and 5. Day one of the invitational is set to begin at 2 p.m.
