Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team fell to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday night in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup, 3-0 (17-25, 20-25, 21-25).
Senior Morgan McAlpin would come out swinging to take the early 1-0 lead for the Saints in the first set. Marymount and the Seahawks continued to trade points tying the game seven times before St. Mary's grabbed the lead at 12-11. Morgan and sophomore Margaret McAlpin would add several more kills for the Saints, but it wasn't enough to make a comeback in the first game, eventually falling 17-25.
The Saints would strike first again in the second set off a kill by Margaret, who was fed by freshman Caroline Hanson. The 1-0 lead did not last long, as the Seahawks struck back with a kill from Alli Graf. The teams would battle back-and-forth with two ties and lead changes until the Seahawks took over at 12-10. St. Mary's kicked off a 5-1 run to expand the lead to 17-11, but the Saints didn't go away, battling back with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 17. The run was led by kills from Margaret and junior Cailyn Thomas. The run wasn't good enough though, as the offense of the Seahawks pieced it together through the final part of the set, taking it 25-20.
Set three started with an early 2-0 lead in favor of the Seahawks. Marymount battled back to tie the game, 8-8, thanks to an ace by junior Mallory Mitchell. Both teams continued trading points until St. Mary's took the final lead at 19-18. The Seahawks' offense would prove to be too much to handle at the end of the set, going on to win 21-25.
Margaret led the team with eight kills, followed by Morgan with seven. Hanson led the team in assists after racking up 17 on the match.
The women will continue Capital Athletic Conference play at home on Saturday, October 17 against York College of Pennsylvania in the Verizon Sports Arena. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
