Box Score 2 Colonial Heights, Va. – Marymount University's baseball squad hosted Western Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon, clinching the opener 5-2 before falling to the Colonials 15-6 in the nightcap. The Saints now sit at 4-8 on the season.
In the opener, the Colonials jumped out to an early lead on the Saints, plating two runs on two hits to open the day's scoring.
The Saints subsequent turn at the plate saw Bret Phillips send a two-run shot over the centerfield wall – knotting the score at 2-2.
After a scoreless 2nd inning from both teams, an odd sense of déjà vu struck the Saints when Phillips stepped in for his second at-bat of the game. With a pair of runners on base, the junior right-fielder delivered a laser to deep, deep center – a homerun shot almost identical to his first only two innings prior.
The 5-RBI performance from Phillips proved more than enough for Saints hurler Ben Berczek, who blanked the Colonials over the final six innings. Berczek posted ten strikeouts in the victory, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The nightcap initially proved quite the puzzler for both squads, as neither defense procured a 1-2-3 opening frame.
Western Connecticut State pounced on the Saints with four runs in its opening at-bat, using several Marymount misfires and a string of hits to secure the early lead.
Much like the opener, however, the Saints were able to even things out in their half of the 1st. A trio of hits and several Colonial errors allowed the Blue and White to push four runs across and tie the score at 4-4.
A scoreless bout over the next two innings eventually gave way to an outpouring of offense from Western Connecticut State. The Saints simply could not stifle the Colonial bats as the visitors plated 11 runs over the next three innings.
Despite a small Saints rally in the bottom of the final frame, the large Colonial lead ultimately proved insurmountable.
Marymount is set to open CAC play on Wednesday when it hosts Penn State Harrisburg. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
