Box Score Colonial Heights, Va. – Despite an impressive Saints comeback mounted over the final several innings, Marymount University's baseball team fell just short to visiting Western Connecticut State, defeated 14-13. The heartbreaker drops the Saints to 3-7 on the season.
The visiting Colonials jumped on the board early, posting a pair of runs in the opening frame. From there, neither offense would make any noise over the next three innings.
Both sides sat dormant until the top of the 5th when the Colonials increased their lead dramatically with a five-run boost. Unanswered by Marymount in the bottom half of the frame, Western Connecticut State would add another tally in their half of the 6th, bringing the deficit to 8-0.
It was then, with a sudden burst of urgency, that the Saints exploded for five runs in the bottom half of that 6th frame, scattering four hits in the inning.
Despite a quick four-run rebuttal from the Colonials, the Saints continued their offensive onslaught into their half of the 7th. A Brandon Orbe grand slam, as well as several Colonial miscues, allowed the Blue and White to plate an impressive eight runs – giving them the 13-12 advantage heading into the 8th.
The Colonials answered with a quick pair of runs to not only regain the lead, but to also cap the night's scoring. The Saints threatened in their half of the 8th frame, but could not push the equalizer across.
Brandon Orbe paced the Saints offense with a 4-6 showing, including a double and the grand slam in the 7th. Orbe also suffered the loss for Marymount, falling to 2-2 on the season.
Marymount returns to action on Sunday when it faces Western Connecticut State in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. at Shepherd Stadium.
