Dan Liberto completed his seventh season with the Marymount men's volleyball program in 2024. In his seven seasons, the program has amassed an overall record of 121-63, with a 42-20 record in the Continental Volleyball Conference.
In 2024, Liberto saw more sustained success for the Marymount men's volleyball program. Recording the third-straight 20-win season for the first time in program history, the team consistently stayed on the AVCA National Poll. Putting together a 22-9 overall record, 6-2 in the CVC, the Saints saw three student-athletes earn CVC All-Conference nods under Liberto's leadership. Diego Peña and Luke Pogue each garnered Second Team honors, with Will Wright rounding it out with a Third Team award. The Marymount program brought postseason volleyball back to Converse Family Fieldhouse, putting together a 3-1 win over Rutgers-Newark in the quarterfinals before bowing out of the tournament against Juniata in the semifinals. Liberto earned his 100th career win in the first match of the season over Stevenson.
The 2023 season saw the Saints Men’s Volleyball program record back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history. After a slow start in the opening two matches, the season saw streaks of seven and eight wins pile up. For their efforts, the Saints were recognized among the nation’s elite programs, seeing seven consecutive weeks in the AVCA top-15 poll, peaking twice at #12 in March. Their 5-3 CVC conference record earned the Saints the #3 overall tournament seed, and once again brought a home playoff match to Converse Family Field House. The Saints topped Kean University in the quarterfinals, before falling to eventual tournament champion Juniata in 5-sets in the semifinals. Senior middle blocker Hayden Kerekes and setter Grayson Andrews earned CVC post-season all-conference honors, along with junior outside hitter Devon Robinson to wrap up the campaign.
The Saints set new heights in the 2022 year with the program’s first ever NCAA appearance, after earning an at-large bid to the tournament following a program best 23-win season. Liberto led the 2022 Saints off to a fast start, as the team went 10-0 during the first third of their slate. The team did not lose a set during that run. The Saints, under Liberto's leadership, were ranked in the AVCA top-15 Coaches Poll for 13 of the 14 weeks during their record season. Senior middle blocker Jason Perkins and junior middle blocker Hayden Kerekes earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-American honors for their efforts. In addition to Perkins and Kerekes, junior setter Sava Topich earned AVCA All-Region Honors. Perkins, Kerekes and senior right-side Raymond Tarasi all earned CVC second-team honors after the Saints finished the regular season with a CVC record of 5-3.
The 2021 campaign saw the Saints battle through a condensed season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Liberto led MU to a 7-7 overall record with a 4-4 mark in CVC play. The Saints earned the No. 6-seed in the CVC tournament and made their sixth consecutive postseason appearance. Liberto guided Chris Manganiello to CVC Libero of the Year honors, while Miles Olson and Hayden Kerekes were named to the Second and Third Teams, respectively.
The 2020 season was an abbreviated campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which Liberto guided the Saints to a 12-9 record with a 4-2 mark in CVC play. That season concluded with a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Dominican. Sam Safley became the fourth AVCA All-American in program history under his watch, while Safley, Joseph Zanelottie, and Chris Manganiello picked up All-CVC honors.
In 2019, Liberto took the Saints to a second-straight CVC tournament semifinals appearance, after a 7-4 record in conference play during the season. He coached senior Remington Shahan and junior Sam Safley to second-team All-CVC selections.
In his first season at the reins, Liberto led the Saints to a 22-7 record, including 11-2 in CVC play. The team advanced to the CVC championship game. He coached two First Team All-CVC players in TJ Wiechecki and Sam Safley, while Erich Bratke was named to the second team. Weichecki earned AVCA first team All-American honors for his efforts during the 2018 season.
Bringing a surplus of knowledge to Marymount, Liberto has coaching experience at countless schools and camps since 2010 along with playing four years, including two years as captain, at DIII volleyball powerhouse State University of New York (SUNY)-New Paltz.
From 2014-2017, Liberto spent three seasons as the head coach for the men's and women's volleyball programs at SUNY Polytechnic in Utica, New York. On the women's side, he accumulated a 63-36 tally over the three-year stretch, including guiding the Wildcats to back-to-back regular-season championship titles in 2015 and 2016. He was named NEAC Coach of the Year twice while claiming major awards of NEAC Player and Rookie of the Year in 2015. On the men's side, he pieced together a three-year total of 51-41 while seeing six of his players earn All-Conference selection.
Prior to his time at SUNY-Poly, he worked as an assistant at Keuka College, SUNY-Geneso, and Nazareth College. Additionally, he has coached at the boy's club level with the Pace Bootlegger and Victor Volleyball clubs in Rochester, New York. His 17-under boys' team finished in the top-20 nationally in 2013. He has worked a number of collegiate volleyball camps including the University of Texas, American University, University of Minnesota, Cornell, SUNY-Binghamton, and Nazareth University.
Beyond his coaching, he served on the NCAA DIII Men's National Championship Committee from 2015-2018. He has served on the AVCA All-American committee, the AVCA All-Region committee, and is a voting member of the AVCA DIII Weekly Coaches Poll.
Liberto graduated from SUNY-New Paltz in 2010 with degrees in Geography and History before earning his Master's at SUNY-Brockport in 2013 in Athletic Administration.
He resides in Reston, Virginia with his wife, Emily Liberto.
