Bainton Steps Away From Marymount Tennis

8/2/2024 12:00:00 PM

ARLINGTON – Marymount head men's and women's tennis coach Tim Bainton has announced his resignation from the athletics department to focus his time on expanding the Sports and Hospitality Management program within Marymount's College of Business, Innovation, Leadership and Technology (BILT).

"I am excited to see Tim focus in and launch the Hospitality and Sport Management program for the University and achieve his goal to build the premier Hospitality and Sport Management program nationally," said Vice President for Athletics, Student Wellness, and Ministry, Jill McCabe. "Over the past three years, Marymount has been fortunate to have Tim following two of his passions, coaching and teaching, with a dual role as an adjunct professor and the Tennis Head Coach.  On the athletics side, Tim has guided the Tennis programs to conference championships the past two seasons and raised the bar for the program to continue to grow and compete at the national level."

Thus far in his time in the classroom at Marymount, Bainton has created an attractive space for students interested in sports management. Alongside bringing in high-profile speakers onto campus to talk with students, he has produced a pair of successful events with SportsX and Storytellers, giving students a platform to improve their public speaking skills and talk about important topics in the sports field.

Moving forward, Bainton will work towards building the Sports Management minor into a full degree.

In his coaching role, Bainton took over the Marymount tennis programs ahead of their first full season of competition in 2021-22. Since then, he led the Saints to incredible heights, boasting a men's dual record of 36-15 - including 12-0 in Atlantic East play – and a women's dual record of 25-20 – including 10-2 in Atlantic East play. Here are some of Marymount's other accomplishments in the last three seasons:

  • Four Atlantic East Rookies of the Year (M. Miller – 2022; S. Dijkema – 2023; E. Degamwar, S. Lucero – 2024)
  • Five Atlantic East Players of the Year (M. Miller – 2022; D. Guiot, C. Haymans – 2023; N. Stromberg, F. Fritz – 2024)
  • Two Atlantic East Coaching Staff of the Year awards (2023 – men's, 2024 – women's)
  • 24 All-Conference selections (singles)
  • 10 All-Conference selections (doubles tandems)
  • Two VaSID Rookies of the Year (M. Miller – 2022, S. Dijkema – 2023)
  • Nine VaSID All-State selections (M. Miller – 2022; C. Haymans (2nd Team), S. Dijkema (2nd Team), D. Guiot, N. Stromberg – 2023; N. Stromberg, E. Degamwar, F. Fritz, S. Lucero – 2024)
