ARLINGTON – In continuing with recent tradition, Marymount men's soccer battled for 90 minutes against a game Immaculata squad, finally pushing ahead with an 82nd-minute finish by
Erick Shoetter-Rojas to win 2-1 on Wednesday night at Long Bridge Park.
NOTABLE
- After beginning the Atlantic East era with an 0-3-1 mark against Immaculata, Marymount has now won four of the last five matchups in the series.
- Leonardo Torres scored his 13th goal of the season, and 65th of his career. He stands second in the entire NCAA (Division I, II, and III) among active players for career goals, trailing only Nathan Donovan of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
- After being held without an assist tonight, Torres still needs one more assist to break Derek Rivera's all-time assists record at Marymount.
- Shoetter-Rojas now has seven goals on the season, which is two away from cracking the top-10 for single-season goals at MU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 16th minute, Torres finished a short feed from Franklin Cruz-Reyes with a strong right-footed shot to put Marymount on top.
- The Mighty Macs responded with a tally of their own in the 26th minute to draw even.
- The score remained deadlocked until the 82nd minute.
- In a sequence started from a Marymount corner kick, Merlin Torres sent a beautiful ball into the box that found the chest of Alex Rendon Benitez. Shoetter-Rojas was in perfect position and finished with a strong left foot to beat the keeper and give MU the 2-1 lead.
- Immaculata couldn't put a shot on target in the final minutes and Marymount held on for the 2-1 win.
- Bayron Banegas recorded five saves to earn the win in net.
