Men's Soccer Clips Catholic in Pope's Cup Battle

ARLINGTON – Marymount men's soccer officially got the Saints on the board in the battle for the Pope's Cup with a solid 3-2 victory over Catholic on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Axel Gonzalez got the Saints on the board early with another beautiful free kick goal to the upper left part of the net just 90 seconds into the match.
  • Catholic drew even after earning a penalty kick opportunity thanks to a foul by Marymount's goalkeeper in the box in the 28th minute.
  • The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
  • MU maintained the pressure to start the second half by firing off the first four shots of the frame.
  • Tony Martinez scored his first goal as a Saint in the 57th minute to put MU on top, 2-1. Reece Ventura sent a short pass in that Martinez finished for the tally.
  • Marymount got some breathing room in the 64th minute after Daniel Yi sent a long ball up the field that found a streaking Leonardo Torres who finished for the 3-1 advantage. Torres has now scored seven times this season.
  • In the 78th minute, Bayron Banegas picked up a crucial PK save to keep Marymount on top, 3-1.
  • The Cardinals did draw within one with a goal in the 82nd minute.
  • The Saints withheld a late flurry of corner kicks to clinch the 3-2 win.
  • The win marks the first time Marymount beat Catholic in men's soccer since 2007.
HEAR FROM COACH KALIN
  • "You couldn't ask for a better springboard into conference play than a well-earned win over your rivals. We came out on fire and honestly missed a great chance to put them away when we missed those two breakaways after going up 1-0. But this is a very significant win, no matter how you look at it, and we are very happy about that."
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will open Atlantic East play with a home tilt against Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday at 2 PM. This will be the final game of four-game homestand.
