WESTMINSTER, Md. – After falling 8-0 to start the day against McDaniel, Marymount softball responded with an emphatic 10-4 win in the nightcap that featured two home runs in a seven-run fifth inning.
NOTABLE
- Leila Hernandez hit a grand slam in game two, which is the first career home run for the rookie.
- It's also just the third grand slam in program history. Kaylynn Johnson had one last season and one earlier this season against Rhode Island College.
- Speaking of Johnson, she had a home run of her own plus an RBI double in the nightcap. With the dinger, she broke her own record for single-season home runs set last spring.
- Shanyn Burch threw seven strong innings with six strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the season on the bump.
GAME ONE
- Marymount put two runners on with only one out in the top of the first, but left them stranded after back-to-back outs to end the inning.
- McDaniel jumped ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the third with an RBI double and an RBI single.
- The Green Terror added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.
GAME TWO
- The Saints loaded the bases in the top of the first but stranded all three after a flyout ended the inning.
- In the top of the second, Burch drilled an RBI single to left to bring home Marymount's first run of the day.
- The next inning, Caitlyn Oakland came around to score after an error by McDaniel.
- The Saints had a chance to add more runs with runners on second and third but an unconventional 2-4 double play on a bunt ended the inning.
- McDaniel took the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs.
- Johnson hit an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth.
- In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Samantha Cinotti hit a timely single to left field for the go-ahead run.
- At the top of the order, Hernandez pulled a grand slam to right center to give Marymount an 8-3 lead.
- After Burch walked, Johnson followed up with a home run to left field to make it a 10-3 ballgame.
- McDaniel scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth as the Saints earned a much-needed 10-4 win.
UP NEXT
- Marymount will remain on the road to take on Atlantic East foe, Centenary.
- The Saints will not be back at Barcroft Park until Saturday, April 15 against Immaculata at 2:30 PM.
