SCRANTON, Pa. - Marymount women's soccer made history Saturday afternoon, earning their first conference championship in program history over the Marywood Pacers on the road.
The Saints needed overtime, but a late goal from
Minnie Morris was the difference, picking up the historic win with a final score of 1-0.
NOTABLE
- Morris punched in the goal in the second half of overtime for the win, her third of the season. She was named Tournament MVP for her performance.
- The Saints posted yet another shutout, their sixth in a row, after fighting off the Marywood offensive threats.
- Hannah Mockenhaupt continued her streak of scoreless outings in the net for the Saints. She has not conceded a goal in 614 minutes.
- Despite the Pacers having 10 corner kick opportunities, the Saints held down the fort in their defensive effort.
- This is the first conference championship for the Marymount women's soccer team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a tightly-contested first half for the two teams, with both looking for strong opportunities but unable to find the back of the net.
- Daniela Carillo-Torres took a shot in the 37th minute, but punched it just wide.
- The game went into halftime at a 0-0 stalemate.
- The game continued to go back-and-forth in the second half of play, with both teams looking to find a slot to break the even tie.
- Laney Placido and Leila Lajdel took back-to-back shots in the 84th and 85th minutes, but both went out right.
- The game stayed scoreless until the final whistle of regulation, sending the match into overtime.
- After a scoreless first 10 minutes, the Saints came through with minutes left of the second half of overtime.
- Coming in off of the corner kick from Placido, the Saints kept the ball in the box and Morris found the opportunity, sinking the goal to give the Saints the late lead.
- Holding the Pacers down the stretch, Marymount went into celebration as the final whistle blew, earning the conference championship.
