Quick Start Propels Men's Soccer to 3-0 Shutout of Waynesburg

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – Two goals in the first five minutes of action propelled Marymount men's soccer to a solid 3-0 victory over Waynesburg on Thursday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

NOTABLE

  • Leonardo Torres continued to impress in his sophomore campaign, scoring two goals. He now sits in a tie for sixth in program history with 18 career goals and a tie for seventh with 43 career points.
  • Derek Rivera registered two assists, upping his career total to 11 helpers, which is good for a tie for fifth in program history with Hall of Famer, Omar Canty.
  • 27 Saints saw game action on Thursday, which accounts for almost the entire active roster.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just over two minutes into the match, Matthew Correa sent a long ball into the box that Waynesburg's keeper punched out to a waiting Torres who fired it home for an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the sixth minute, Marymount jumped ahead by two off a set piece. After a corner kick by Rivera, Axel Gonzalez finished for his first goal of the young season.
  • After the early barrage, things settled down and Marymount headed into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
  • In the 82nd minute, Marymount iced the game thanks to another set piece. After Rivera sent the ball in, freshman Daniel Yi got a foot on it before Torres finished for his second goal of the match.

HEAR FROM COACH KALIN

"I'm really happy with today's result. Jumping out 2-0 was critical and allowed us to go pretty deep into our bench. I was really pleased with the performances of our back line, particularly Axel.  Our midfield was a bit inconsistent but that's expected early on. I liked some things I saw from guys who came into the game up top and Leo starting off with two goals is great confidence for him going into the weekend."

UP NEXT

  • Marymount will take on NC Wesleyan in a neutral-site match on Saturday at 3 PM on the campus of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
  • The Saints will remain on the road for a Labor Day clash against Mary Baldwin on Monday at 4 PM.
