Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's basketball team took early control in a 70-54 Atlantic East Conference win over Marywood University on Saturday at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
The Saints took control in the opening minutes with a 12-0 run. Freshman Ava Achtyl and sophomore Chandler Eddleton each score two layups to power the run.
Marymount held that double-digit lead through the first quarter and freshman Kelly Ceroll gave the team a 16-point edge with a layup with 15 seconds remaining for a 24-8 lead.
The Pacers began to whittle away at the Saints' lead in the second quarter with a 14-4 run that spanned the first seven minutes of the period.
Leading by six, junior Symantha Shackelford put the Saints back up by double-figures with a layup and two free throws, 32-22. They carried that advantage to a 38-28 lead at halftime.
At the break, Eddleton was pacing the Saints with 12 points. MU held a 15-12 edge on the boards and had corralled five steals in the first half.
A layup from sophomore Terra Dzambo pushed the lead back up to 14 points midway through the third quarter, but the Pacers made another attempt to get back into the game.
They were able to get back to within five points of the lead with 1:52 to play in the third. The Saints took a seven-point advantage into the final quarter after a layup from Eddleton put the score at 50-43.
Marymount opened the fourth with six-straight points, with four scored by Shackelford on two free throws and a layup. The spurt put the Saints back ahead by 13, 56-43. They would get the lead up to as many as 16 points on the way to securing the win with a 19-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Eddleton led the team with a career-high 22 points in the game, while Shackelford added 16. Dzambo finished with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for the double-double. The Saints' defense gathered 12 steals and held the Pacers to just 18.2 percent shooting from behind the three-point arc.
The Saints will travel to Cabrini University for their next game in Atlantic East action on Wednesday, February 9. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
