Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- In a contest that came down to the final seconds, the Marymount University men's basketball team fell to Neumann University in the Atlantic East Conference Championship game.
It was a tale of two halves as the Saints locked horns with the Knights for the Atlantic East title. MU dominated the opening half of play with a 52.0% field goal percentage and a 42.9% mark from beyond the arc. The Blue and White's hot shooting gave them a 33-24 lead at the end of the first half. Neumann found its flow in the second half, however, with a 60.0% mark from the floor, which allowed the Knights to steal the victory inside of Converse Family Fieldhouse.
The Saints built their lead with an 8-0 run that spanned three minutes during the half, Montell Cooper started the run, while Miles Brown chipped n four points to push Marymount ahead. The Blue and White pushed their lead to 11 to start the second half behind a jumper from Wyatt Hockenberry.
The two sides continued to trade blows as the half wore on. With just under seven minutes to play, Marcus Stubbs knocked down a jumper to make it a 53-49 game. Despite the Saints' best efforts on defense, Neumann took a 57-55 lead with 1:55 on the clock. Cooper tied the game for the Saints, but the Knights once again answered on the other end. With 33 ticks on the clock, Cooper tied the game at 59-59 with a pair of free throws. The Saints were unable to seize the momentum, however, as Neumann scored one final basket to seal the contest.
Cooper led the Saints with 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Hockenberry joined Cooper in double figures with 13 points and a game-high four steals. Off the bench, Stubbs supplied nine points. Xavier Reaves chipped in seven points and six rebounds
