Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with an all-important victory over the visiting Knights of Neumann University, 69-66, inside of Converse Family Fieldhouse.
Prior to the contest, the Saints honored their four members of the Class of 2022; Roey Stern, Xavier Reaves, Zamir Clifton, and Miles Brown. The Blue and White made sure their seniors ended the day on a high note, as the victory clinched the No.1-seed in the Atlantic East Conference Tournament.
It came down to the final minutes between the top two teams on the conference leaderboard, as neither side gained much separation throughout the tilt. Marymount started the final frame with a six-point lead, but the Knights battled back and took a 39-37 advantage.
Marymount responded with an 11-0 run to seize a 48-39 lead. Montell Cooper highlighted the barrage with eight points, six of which came from beyond the arc. The back-and-forth between the two sides continued from there, but Neumann pulled back within one at 65-64 with just under three minutes left to play.
Reaves quickly seized the momentum back for the Saints, however, as he capped a steal from Marcus Stubbs with a dunk on the opposite end to make it 67-64. Neumann made it a one-point game with 12 ticks on the clock, but Cooper nailed a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Cooper led the Saints with 20 points with a 6-for-11 mark from the field and a 6-for-9 showing at the free-throw line. The sophomore added three assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block to round out his performance. Clifton joined Cooper in double-figures with a career-high-tying 16 points. Reaves finished with eight points and a team-best five rebounds and eight points. Stubbs supplied nine points off of the bench for the Saints.
Marymount awaits its opponent for the semifinals of the conference tournament on Wednesday, February 23. The contest will tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
