Eddleton converts late three-point play to push Saints past Mighty Macs in conference play

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Marymount University women's basketball team edged Immaculata University, 58-57, on a three-point play by sophomore Chandler Eddleton in the final minute in Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday night.

Trailing 57-55 with just 27 seconds remaining, Eddleton converted on a layup through a foul. She drained the ensuing free throw to take a one-point lead, and the Saints' defense forced a Mighty Macs' miss on the other end to close out the game.

Eddleton finished second on the team with 16 points in the game, while leading the team with nine rebounds. Junior Symantha Shackelford led the way for the Saints with 21 points and three steals.

The Saints used a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from sophomore Terra Dzambo, to build a 13-6 lead in the first quarter. Immaculata responded with six-straight points, but Marymount led 13-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Mighty Macs controlled the second quarter, 22-16, leading to a 34-29 advantage at halftime. The Saints held an 18-15 edge on the boards in the first half and were led by 10 points from Shackelford.

Behind seven more points from Shackelford in the third quarter, MU kept the score close through the period. While holding the Mighty Macs to just 33.3 percent from the floor in the frame, the Saints outscored Immaculata 14-11 in the third and trailing by just two, 45-43, heading into the fourth quarter.

Dzambo hit a layup at the eight-minute mark to regain the lead for the Saints, 47-45. Shackelford and Eddleton combined for six free throws through the quarter to maintain the slight lead, but the Mighty Macs fought back with an 8-2 run to take the lead, just before Eddleton's late-game heroics.

The win improves the Saints' record to 9-1 in Atlantic East play. They finished the game with a 31-29 edge in rebounding and a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Marymount will return to play on Thursday, February 17 at Centenary University in Atlantic East action. The game is set for 6 p.m.
