Saints End Season in NCAA First Round

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In a physical battle in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Marymount men's soccer dropped a hard-fought contest to host Mary Washington on Saturday morning, 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mary Washington came out firing in the first half with 13 shots coming in the first 45 minutes.
  • Bayron Banegas nabbed a career-high seven saves in the frame to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
  • Marymount drew three corner kicks and had a solid free kick chance in the first half but it sailed out wide left.
  • In the second half, Carlos Varona made a couple impressive blocks as the last defender to keep Mary Washington off the scoreboard in the early going.
  • The Eagles finally broke through in the 69th minute with Sammy Amorose firing a low kick that slipped past three Marymount defenders and inside the near post to give Mary Washington the 1-0 lead.
  • Marymount placed two shots on goal in the final 20 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net.
SEASON WRAP-UP
  • Marymount finished the season as the Atlantic East champion with a 12-7-1 record.
  • The Saints qualified for the first NCAA Tournament in the 33-year history of the men's soccer program.
  • Marymount had seven All-Conference selections, including the Atlantic East Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coaching Staff of the Year. Eduardo Cardonne also earned the prestigious Atlantic East Elite 20 Award.
HEAR FROM COACH KALIN
  • "As coaches we are so grateful for the journey this team took us on. It stings right now to know you were so close. But we achieved something far greater in having taken the program to that next level. We hung right with a very solid top-20 program and we can't be prouder of the boys. We now know how hard it is to get here and all the emotions - the good and the not-so-good - we've felt these past two weeks. With everyone back next year, I have no doubt the bar will be set high next year. VAMOS SAINTS!
