FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Marymount women's volleyball went to five sets on Thursday night against Eastern University but fell in a heartbreaker to bow out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round.
NOTABLE
- Elissa Munsterman had 20 kills on the night to finish with exactly 1,000 kills in her four-year career.
- Mya Bowers had 14 kills and only two errors to hit .414. She also added a team-high four blocks, three of which came on consecutive plays in the third set.
- Maya Harris had a career-high 21 digs to lead the Saints on the defensive end.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first set, Marymount scored six points in a row to take a 10-9 lead. But Eastern finished the set by scoring 16 of the next 20 points to win, 25-14.
- The Saints responded by taking set two, 25-20.
- The third set was back-and-forth with Marymount taking its final lead at 18-17. Eastern scored the final eight points of the set to win, 25-18.
- Another back-and-forth set followed with the Saints taking control thanks to a strong serve by Sydney Sands. Sands piloted MU to four points in a row to give the Saints an 18-14 lead that paved the way for an eventual 25-19 win.
- In the decisive fifth set, Marymount appeared in control with an 8-5 lead at the turn. But after the teams switched sides, Eastern scored six straight points and pulled away for a 15-11 win.
SEASON WRAP-UP
- Marymount finished the season as the Atlantic East champion with a 19-15 overall record.
- The Saints returned to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2018.
- Marymount had five All-Conference selections and also earned the Atlantic East Elite 20 Award for the second year in a row.
