Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team fell in a heartbreaker to Cabrini University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 70-69 inside of Converse Family Fieldhouse.
It came down to the wire between the two Atlantic East Conference rivals, as the lead changed four times in the last two minutes of the tilt. The second half swung the visitor's way in the early going, as Cabrini raced out to a 46-35 lead after a basket from Aquil Stewart. Cabrini continued to apply offensive pressure, but the Blue and White battled back and forced the issue as time wound down.
The Saints' offense came alive as the half wore on. Cabrini eventually grew its edge to 12, but Marymount answered with a 9-0 run against the Cavaliers zone-defense to make it a 60-57 game. Marcus Stubbs kickstarted the blitz with a three-point make, while Xavier Reaves provided four points during the run.
With the game back up for grabs, the Saints took the lead at 69-68 after a layup from Miles Brown with 1:17 left on the clock. MU was unable to build on the momentum from there, however. The Cavaliers knocked down a pair of late free throws, while the Saints' last-second drive to the rim came up short to seal the contest.
Three Saints finished in double figures, highlighted by two double-double performances from Reaves and Brown. Reaves finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists, while Brown tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists. Wyatt Hockenberry rounded out MU's double-digit scorers with 17 points on 5-of-11 (45.5%) shooting from beyond the arc. Montell Cooper chipped in seven points and four assists. Roey Stern added a career-high-tying seven assists.
Marymount will look to bounce back on Wednesday, January 19, when it battles Gwynedd Mercy University on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
