Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Marymount University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the young season on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory on the road over McDaniel College.
The Saints' (1-2) offense was once again spurred on by first-year standout Leonardo Torres. The Manassas, Virginia, native continued his point streak to start his career after he potted MU's second goal of the afternoon. Torres cut in on the right flank and raced into the box before he laced an effort into the opposite corner for the marker in the 76th minute, just three minutes after the opening tally.
Marymount's first goal came via a dash of misfortune for the Green Terror (0-2), as an own goal turned into a 1-0 lead for the Saints in the 73rd minute. The goal came via consistent pressure from MU's attack, as a deep free-kick that traveled into the box caromed off of a defender's headed clearance attempt.
With the two-goal lead intact, the Saints never relented, as Carlos Varona and Jason Grande both forced McDaniel's netminder into two saves as the clock wound down. MU's efforts kept the Green Terror from fighting back into the contest and sealed the win.
The contest was fairly even throughout, but four second-half shots from Marymount resulted in a 7-4 edge for the Saints. In goal, Brian Cruz picked up the victory with a pair of saves.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday, September 11, when it hosts Stevenson University in its home opener. The contest is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
