Torres Continues Point Streak; Saints Fall to Stevenson

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. -- First-year talisman Leonardo Torres continued his season-opening point streak on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for the Marymount University men's soccer team, as the Saints fell to Stevenson University, 2-1.

Torres' torrid start to his collegiate career continued against the Mustangs, as he potted his fourth goal of the season. After this afternoon's marker, Torres has now had his name on the scoresheet in each of the Saints' contests this season.

While plenty of the contest was a battle in the midfield, Stevenson enjoyed slightly more possession with a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The momentum swung towards the visitors early, as the Mustangs stole a goal in the 11th minute.

The Saints didn't waver and had a chance to knot the score in the 26th minute with a penalty kick chance, but MU couldn't convert the spot-kick. Brian Cruz made a late save to keep the score intact heading into the halftime break.

Both sides upped the physicality and offensive pressure in the second half. After a bevy of shots from both MU and Stevenson, the Mustangs broke through off of a free-kick chance, as Dylan Holy snuck a headed attempt by Ronald Clark for the goal.

Marymount responded through Torres just three minutes later. The Manassas, Virginia, native collected a pass from Derek Rivera over the top of the defense and lofted the ball over Stevenson's goalkeeper to cut the lead in half.

Joey Mastran tested the Mustangs' Kristian Slaby in the 79th minute and Carlos Varona sent a shot on frame in the 89th minute, but each attempt was spurned away to keep MU off of the board.

In goal, Cruz and Clark split time and finished with two and three saves, respectively. For Rivera, the assist marked his second of the season.

The Saints have a quick turnaround as they return to the pitch on Monday, September 13, when they hit the road for a battle against the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 4:30 p.m.
