Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- In a contest that featured plenty of chances for both sides, the Marymount University men's soccer team was unable to find the goals it needed in a 2-0 defeat to Stevenson University.
The game was rife with scoring chances from the opening moments. Both teams employed a high-energy and high-press game plan that saw plenty of battles across each side's back line. Stevenson tallied 20 shots during the contest, while MU registered 16. Anthony Solorzano, Manny Gaunaurd, and Gabriel Psallidas led the charge for the Saints with three shots apiece. Derek Manzanares finished with a team-high five saves in net.
Early pressure from the Mustangs paid off for the visitors in the fourth minute, as Edson DeMata managed to lift the ball past Brian Cruz for the game's opening goal. Marymount pushed furiously for an equalizer, as Solorzano saw an attempt on goal turned away in the 12 minute.
As the half wore on, MU earned a corner kick in the 32 minute. Psallidas took the attempt and curled the ball toward goal but his audacious attempt clipped the crossbar.
Stevenson managed to tag the Blue and White for another goal 10 minutes into the second half with a curling effort that snuck past the outstretched arms of Manzanares. Marymount continued to throw players forward to cut into the visitors lead.
The Blue and White looked to have broken through with three minutes left to play via freshman Manny Gaunaurd. The Pinecrest, Florida, native had the ball bounce to his feet in the box and immediately sent a shot screaming towards goal. However, the shot rang the crossbar once again to keep the Saints off of the scoreboard.
Marymount closes out its season on Saturday, March 20, when the Saints travel to Wesley College for an exhibition contest. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
