Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team opened its season on Saturday morning at the Converse Family Fieldhouse, taking down the University of Lynchburg in a five-set match, 3-2.
The Saints were led, in a hard-fought match, by sophomore Elissa Munsterman and junior Caylee Shelton. Each tallied a double-double, as Munsterman put down 16 kills, tying a career-high, along with 16 digs, also a career high. Shelton added 12 kills and 14 digs.
Munsterman led the way with four kills through the first set, including two down the stretch. Trailing late, 18-16, MU battled back for a 25-22 victory. Shelton and junior Kaitlyn Doyle, each, added three kills, with Shelton putting down the final point to take the match lead.
The Hornets came back to take control in the second set and tied the match, but the Saints rebounded in the third with a 25-17 win. With the team's tied 13-13, Marymount finished out on a 12-4 run to take the set, sparked with the help of a block by sophomore Aja' Irving and freshman Mya Bowers.
Lynchburg was able to tie the match again to force a fifth, and the final set stayed true to form in a close battle.
Tied 9-9, two service aces from sophomore Natalie Garbalosa, and another ace from senior Jasmine Roy helped the Saints use a 6-3 run to take the win.
Munsterman and Shelton, each, tacked on a kill in the final points, before Munsterman put the contest away with an ace.
Roy led the defense with 19 digs, and freshman Sydney Sands tallied 35 assists.
Marymount will take to the road for its next contest, going to Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday, March 10 for a 7 p.m., matchup.
