FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount University women's basketball team dropped a close contest to the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, 54-52.

Senior Katie McShea paced the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, while sophomores Terra Dzambo and Chandler Eddleton chipped in with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

The teams played to a 16-16 tie in the first quarter, as Marymount took advantage of 14 free throw attempts, converting on 10 before the Saints would pull away in the second quarter.

The Saints opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, led by two layups from McShea. The Hainesport, N.J., native tallied seven points in the quarter, as the Saints outscored the Eagles 16-6 and held a 32-22 edge at halftime.

At the break, McShea had already registered 11 points and eight rebounds. Mary Washington held a slight 19-18 edge on the boards, but the Marymount defense clamped down for six steals in the first two quarters.

Converting from the free-throw line continued to be a strength for Marymount, as Dzambo, Eddleton, and McShea, each, hit a pair of foul shots in the opening minutes of the second half. Followed by a layup from McShea, Marymount pushed its lead to 40-24.

The Eagles responded with a 14-5 run to close the third to cut into the Saints lead, 45-38, heading into the fourth quarter.

Junior Claire Smith converted a layup to bring the Saints' lead to 47-40 early in the final frame, but Mary Washington continued its surge to tie the score, 47-47, and eventually took a 51-49 lead with 52 seconds to play.

Trailing 54-49, Dzambo knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Saints alive in the final 14 seconds. However, the Eagles held on for the win in the final minute, as a last-chance shot for the Saints came up short.

Marymount will return to the Converse Family Fieldhouse for its next game, playing host to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday, December 8. The game is set for 6 p.m.
