Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team fended off a late comeback attempt from the Dickinson College Red Devils in Converse Family Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon to earn a 58-55 win.
Neither side created much separation throughout the contest, which set up a tension-packed finish between the Saints and Red Devils. As the clock wound down, Marymount built a nine-point advantage, 53-44, on the heels of a layup from Roey Stern.
With 34 seconds left on the clock, Dickinson pulled back within three at 56-53 after a 3-pointer from Anthony Goeb. The Blue and White didn't waver, however, as Xavier Reaves calmly stepped up to the charity stripe and knocked down both free throws to re-establish a five-point lead.
While Dickinson managed to sink another layup, Marcus Stubbs brought the game to a close as time expired. The Red Devils' Ryan Robinson raced up the floor with three ticks left on the clock, but Stubbs picked his pocket to close out the contest.
Marymount's defense stood out against Dickinson, as the Saints held the visitors to just 22.2% (6-for-27) shooting from beyond the three-point arc. The Blue and White registered 13 steals and forced the Red Devils into 23 turnovers, which translated into 16 points for the home side.
Reaves led the way for Marymount with his second consecutive double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. The senior finished a stellar 10-for-15 (66.7%) from the floor and tallied three steals. Montell Cooper chipped in 12 points, while Marcus Stubbs added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals off of the bench.
The Blue and White hit the road for their final contest before the New Year on Tuesday, December, 21 when they open Atlantic East Conference play at Centenary University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
