Women's basketball falls to Shenandoah in mid-week matchup

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Marymount University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference road matchup with Shenandoah University on Tuesday evening, 62-56.

The Saints took early control in the game, holding Shenandoah to just five points in the first quarter on the way to a 15-5 lead.

Sophomore Terra Dzambo and junior Symantha Shackelford opened the game with scores for an early 4-0 lead. The Saints pushed their lead to double-digits in the opening quarter, 12-2, on a pair of free throws by junior Claire Smith.

A Shackelford three-pointer at the buzzer put an exclamation point on the strong first quarter, with Marymount holding its 10-point edge.

The Saints' defense held Shenandoah to just 16.7 percent shooting in the quarter to build the advantage.

The Hornets fought back with a 22-point second quarter, but the Saints closed the half on a 10-6 run to hold a 28-27 advantage at halftime. Shackelford, again, hit from long distance to keep the lead. She finished the game second on the team with 13 points.

Shenandoah opened the second half with 12 unanswered points to take the lead. Senior Katie McShea came through with five points in the final 2:45 of the third quarter to help get the Saints' offense going again.

Following a layup by Dzambo, Marymount cut the Hornets' lead to just six, 47-41, headed into the final quarter.

Despite keeping the score close, the Saints were unable to get any closer than four points from the lead in the quarter. The teams played to an even 15-15 score in the fourth, as Shenandoah held on.

McShea led the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Shackelford led the way with three steals and three assists.

Marymount will return to action on Sunday, November 28 to host the University of Rochester at the Converse Family Fieldhouse. The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
