Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Marymount University women's basketball team closed out the Stevenson University tip-off tournament with a hard-fought 79-43 loss against a tough Johns Hopkins University team on Sunday afternoon.
MU was unable to generate a consistent attack against the Blue Jays, as Johns Hopkins registered 13 steals and six blocks to keep the Saints out of rhythm. Marymount forced the Blue Jays into 20 turnovers, but was unable to capitalize on the miscues.
The Saints hung tight with Johns Hopkins throughout the first quarter. Marymount shot 46.7% (7-for-15) from the floor over the opening 10 minutes and knocked down three of its four attempts from the free-throw line. The Blue Jays opened an early 8-2 edge, but MU chipped away and pulled back within four at 10-6 via a layup from Terra Dzambo.
The Blue and White kept battling as the quarter wound down and outscored Johns Hopkins 7-2 over the final two minutes. Katie McShea spurred the run with five points, as the Saints pulled within three points at 20-17 at the end of the first frame.
Despite MU's best efforts, the Blue Jays hit a groove to open the second quarter, and used an 8-0 run to jump out to a 28-17 lead. Kyla Treadwell halted the run, but the damage was done as Johns Hopkins kept its foot on the gas with a 61.5% (8-for-13) field goal percentage throughout the frame, which resulted in a 42-28 lead at the half time break. The early deficit proved to be too much for the Saints to overcome against the Blue Jays' defensive setup.
McShea led the way for the Blue and white with 18 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Dzambo chipped in eight points and four boards, while Chandler Eddleton supplied seven points, four rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Marymount returns to Converse Family Fieldhouse to open the Pablo Coto Tip-off Tournament on Friday, November 19, against Eastern University. The contest is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
